Walter V. Monson, age 94 of Amery, WI, formerly of Clear Lake, WI died early on Monday, February 3, 2020 at the Willow Ridge Care Center in Amery, WI.
Walter Vernon Monson was born on December 29, 1925 in Clear Lake, WI the son of Arvid & Mary (Humphrey) Monson. He grew up in the Clear Lake area, was baptized at the United Methodist Church there, and graduated from Clear Lake High School in 1944. In addition to growing up on the family farm, Walter earned a little extra money playing with the “Dana Yelle, Old Time Band” and continued to do so over the years. In 1945, Walter was drafted into the US Army as a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne at Ft. Benning, GA. When WWII ended, he had the privilege of marching in the Victory parade in New York City. After he was honorably discharged in 1946, Walter then went on to attend the University of WI at Madison to study forestry. On September 10, 1948, he was united in marriage to Ardella A. Allram at West Akers Lutheran Church in Prairie Farm, WI and was later confirmed there. Together they raised 6 children, Kimberly, Derry, Terry, Jan, Vaughn and Mark. In 1951, Walter began working as a Rural Letter Carrier and was very active in his church and community. While living south of Reeve, he served as the president of the Reeve Community Club for many years, helping with fairs and parades. Also during this time, Walter was leader of the Reeve 4-H Club and received his 25 year leadership pin. In his spare time, Walter enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, fishing and spending time at his cabin in Herbster, WI. He also enjoyed playing golf and served as the president of the Clear Lake Golf club. Walter was also very active at West Akers Church, serving on the church board and as president for many years. Walter retired in 1984 from the post office and lived in Reeve until he moved with Ardella to Clear Lake in 2004. He has been a resident of Amery for the past few years and will be sorely missed by his family and many friends.
