Thomas Nelson Obituary

Thomas D. Nelson, age 83, of Glenwood City, WI passed away on April 16, 2026, at  Hammond Health Services in Hammond, WI.

Tom was born on July 20, 1942, in Reeve, WI to Douglas & Adelaide (Smith) Nelson.  He grew up in the Clear Lake, WI area on the family farm. He graduated high school from Wisconsin Academy in Columbus, Wisconsin in 1961. In 1962 Tom joined the United States Army and served 2 tours of duty in Vietnam. He proudly served in the Army for 21 years, many of those years he was stationed in Germany, which he referred to as his second home. Upon retiring from the Army in 1983 as a Sergeant First Class he started his second career as a dairy and crop farmer in Clear Lake, WI.

In 1982 Tom married Carol Kelling in Clear Lake, WI.  They worked side by side on the family farm and raised a son and daughter. Tom also had two sons from his first marriage. In 2009 Tom and Carol sold their dairy cattle for the final time, but continued to crop farm, raise beef cattle and chickens.  In December 2020 Tom suffered a stroke, but continued to raise chickens and cattle until his health declined.  In May 2023 Tom and Carol sold their beloved family farm and moved to Glenwood City to be closer to their two children.

In his spare time Tom enjoyed golfing, spending time with his family, playing Mexican Train, driving his semi and if visiting and talking was a hobby that would be his favorite one! Tom was a jack of all trades and could fix anything.  After retiring, Tom and Carol loved spending winters in Avon Park, FL.

Tom is survived by his wife Carol of 43 years and his four children, Tony (Bonita) Nelson of Clayton, WI, Todd (Tammy) Nelson of Murfreesboro, TN, Elizabeth (Spencer) Boyles of Glenwood City, WI and Douglas (Cayci) Nelson of Glenwood City, WI; brothers Roger (Bette) Nelson of Goodlettsville, TN, Jerry (Bernice) Nelson of Berrien Springs, MI; sister Charlotte (John) Laughridge of Land O’ Lakes, FL; sister in law Susan Brede of Gaylord, MN.  He is also survived by his grandchildren Ryan, Courtney, Kinsey, Liam, Reid, Rex, Cole, Jaxon, Taylor and Cami and 5 great grandchildren and one on the way. He is also survived by many beloved cousins, nieces and nephews and friends whom he loved as family.

Tom is preceded in death by; his parents Douglas and Adelaide Nelson, his mother and father in law Lloyd and Betty Kelling, his brother George Nelson, his sister Judy Wolcott, and two brother in laws Alvin Wolcott and Fred Brede.
