Elsie Wood Obituary

Elsie M. Wood, age 92 of Clear Lake, WI passed away early on Saturday, July 28, 2012 at the Golden Age Manor Nursing Home in Amery, WI.

Elsie Margaret Wood was born on June 16, 1920 in Clear Lake, WI, the daughter of Charles E. Warner & Gertrude Francis.  
She grew up in Clear Lake and attended Clear Lake Grade School, Drummond High School and Superior State Teachers College.  After graduating teachers college, Elsie taught rural schools from 1940 to 1948.  On April 24, 1943, she was united in marriage to Clayton Daniel Wood at the Reeve United Brethren Church and together made their home in Clear Lake and raised three children, Joyce, Jerry, & Jay.  Elsie was active in conservation and served as secretary of the 4 County Corners Sportsman’s Club for 20 years.  She was also   active in the Polk County Sportsman’s Club and was the first women in the state to serve in the Wisconsin Conservation Congress,  serving in that capacity for a period of ten years from 1960 - 1970.  Elsie and Clayton also operated Wood’s Sport Shop in Clear Lake for 24 years from 1954 to 1978.   She was also an active member of the Clear Lake United Methodist Church.    Elsie enjoyed traveling,  collecting teddy bears, hunting & fishing, sewing, making quilts, & embroidering.  She was active in the Knotty Pine 4-H,  serving as an  advisor and being recognized for over 44 years of service.  On a number of occasions, Elsie and Clayton chaperoned delegates on out of state 4-H Club Exchanges.   She was actively involved with the Clear Lake Library, the Clear Lake Museum Chronicle, & was a charter member of the Clear Lake Area Museum Board serving as a historian  and  doing historical research for people requested her expertise.    Elsie especially loved spending time with her grandchildren and was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother & friend.  

She is preceded in death by her parents, Charles &  Gertrude Warner;  sister, Della Baland;  & brother,  Berton Warner.

Funeral Service at the United Methodist Church in Clear Lake, Wisconsin ,
on Thursday, August 2, 2012 at 11 am.

Visitation on Wednesday, August 1, 2012 at the Scheuermann Funeral Home from 4  - 8  pm and
one hour before the services at the church on Thursday.
